Diabetic Retinopathy

The eye has a delicate web of blood vessels supplying vital nutrients. When these blood vessels become weakened due to high blood sugar levels, this can cause them to grow and bleed in the retina, leading to significant vision loss and even blindness.

The beginning stages of diabetic retinopathy rarely show any symptoms. As the disease progresses, the macula becomes inflamed and blurry vision and other symptoms often set in.

Fortunately, there’s an array of treatment and management options available to keep your eyes and vision healthy:

  • Medication
  • Anti-VEGF or steroid injections
  • Laser surgery
  • Vitrectomy

Glaucoma

Glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases that occur when the inner-eye pressure reaches extremely high levels, damaging the optic nerve. The longer this pressure builds, the more likely irreversible vision loss or blindness will occur.

Although there isn’t yet a cure for glaucoma, there are a number of treatments that can slow the disease’s progression:

  • Eye drops
  • Laser therapy
  • Surgical interventions, such as filtration and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS)
  • Oral medications
  • Drainage tubes

Cataracts

Cataracts are caused by the body’s natural aging process, which results in the eye’s lens becoming cloudy, leading to blurry vision.

Cataract surgery is a safe and effective procedure that can restore clear vision by removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

The eye can be compared to a camera that captures every detail of the world around you.

When the central part of the “camera,” known as the retina, slowly loses its sharpness and precision — this causes the once-clear images that your retina recorded to become blurry and distorted. There are two forms of macular degeneration: dry AMD and wet AMD. Currently, there’s no specific treatment for dry AMD, but certain nutritional supplements can make a significant difference for people who’ve received an AMD diagnosis.

On the other hand, wet AMD treatment options include:

  • Anti-VEGF Injections
  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT)
  • Laser photocoagulation
